BESS Storage, a rapidly expanding market

With the increasing share of renewable energies (solar and wind) and the reduction of traditional controllable means (especially thermal), the French electricity grid is currently undergoing a major transformation : it must store excess energy to redistribute it during peak demand and provide grid support services, as well as shift renewable energy production hours to better integrate them and smooth out the daily electricity price curve.

In this context, battery storage (BESS) is particularly well-suited, offering immediate (milliseconds) and bidirectional (charge/discharge) flexibility. RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Électricité), the French public grid operator, has expressed a strong intention to invest heavily in this type of solution . The rise of renewables and growing flexibility needs make battery storage structurally essential.

A project soon to be built in Alsace

Based on this analysis, the company Skysun decided in 2025 to expand its activities, traditionally focused on photovoltaic energy, to include battery storage projects.

With the Skysun BESS project, the company will soon build its first storage site in the heart of Alsace, with an injection capacity of 2.5 MW and a storage capacity of 5 MWh , allowing for a 2-hour injection/draw duration.

The project targeted by this financing is Ready-to-Build (RTB), and construction can begin as soon as the project company is established and financing with Total Energies Invest is secured. The land is secured by a long-term lease agreement, the building permit has been obtained and is free of any appeals, and Enedis’ Technical and Financial Proposal for grid connection has been received.

With this first tranche, you will directly finance its construction , which is set to begin in summer 2026, with commissioning expected in early 2027.

Did you know? 5 misconceptions about BESS

Energy storage is a cornerstone of the energy transition, yet it remains poorly understood. Let’s debunk 5 common myths about batteries.

  • Myth 1: Batteries are dangerous and prone to catching fire In reality, modern BESS are equipped with fire suppression systems, thermal sensors, and 24/7 monitoring .

  • Myth 2: Battery storage is not profitable Today, storage helps reduce peak power costs, monetize energy during high-demand hours, and participate in grid services.

  • Myth 3: Batteries wear out too quickly With a lifespan of 10 to 20 years (8,000 to 10,000 cycles) , they often last as long as solar assets themselves.

  • Myth 4: Installing a BESS is extremely complex It all depends on the chosen model. For turnkey operators like Skysun, studies and permits, grid connection, operation, and maintenance are fully managed.

  • Myth 5: Batteries are only useful for solar In reality, batteries store electricity regardless of its source : grid, solar, wind, or generators. They enable multiple grid services, for which they are remunerated independently of the electricity source.

DNA

Founded in 2017 in Belgium, Skysun was born out of a desire by its co-founders, Arthur Dawans and Léopold Coppieters, to make solar energy easy and accessible to everyone . While switching to solar energy often seems expensive, complex, and risky, Skysun has aimed from the outset to remove these barriers.

In 2024, it raised nearly €17 million from institutional investors, including the investment fund Andrea Partners .

Project illustration

Initially active in the solar power segment, Skysun quickly recognized the importance of offering efficient storage solutions to address the intermittency of solar and wind energy. Since 2025, it has diversified its business by launching a BESS storage solution.

The company now has a portfolio of 35 MWp of photovoltaic projects and 99 MW of BESS storage projects in France and Belgium.

Turnkey Solution

Skysun installs photovoltaic panels free of charge: on the roofs, parking lots, or land of its partners, it offers a solution with no upfront investment. It thus provides ultra-competitive fixed-price green electricity, enabling immediate energy bill savings while increasing the value of real estate assets.

The company is committed to the environment by developing innovative solutions for the production and storage of green electricity. It focuses on 5 key values:

  • Creativity : “For every problem, there is a solution. Creativity means inventing, experimenting, taking initiative, making mistakes, and learning from them.”
  • Joy : “Happy people contribute more easily to a better society.”
  • Resilience : “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”
  • Ownership : “If we are not part of the solution, we are part of the problem.”
  • Environment : “‘One day’ is not a day of the week; we must act now.”

Project Examples: SolarMarket

A renovated roof equipped with 5,800 solar panels—this is the SolarMarket project, promising a production of 1,653 MWh , equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 700 households.

This monument, listed as part of Belgium’s heritage, originally had a zinc roof. In the 1980s, it was replaced with roofing. Thanks to Zinclike (a BIPV solution), Skysun successfully restored the original aesthetic of the exposed zinc roof while integrating a modern photovoltaic installation.

Project illustration

The project was made possible through the third-party investor and crowdfunding model. It aligns with the goal of developing decentralized energy outside the grid, with lower costs, and green energy that can contribute to Belgium’s climate objectives.

“This is an innovative project that allows citizens to participate in the sustainable development of their neighborhood,” praised Thomas Dermine, Belgian Secretary of State for Economic Recovery.

Risk overview

Construction risks

Assembly

Risk related to errors or defects during assembly that may affect the final quality of the product

Mitigation methods

The battery module suppliers are well-established manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers (representing the highest standard of production quality). In addition, the subcontractors for the EPC portion are well-established companies in the industry.

Refinancing risk

Refinancing

Credit risk related to the company's ability to refinance and meet its debt obligations.

Mitigation methods

The project’s business plan uses construction cost assumptions based on the upper end of the estimates currently available. Furthermore, the authorized debt level for the project is 80% of construction costs, requiring the project sponsor to contribute a substantial portion of the project costs. Finally, the debt service coverage ratio indicates that, based on the business plan’s assumptions, revenues exceed debt service in each period, confirming the project’s attractiveness to an institutional financier (such as a bank) and thus the assumption of bank refinancing after commissioning, which will refinance the financing presented here.

Operating risks

Key Person

Risk related to an activity that depends on a limited number of key persons responsible for carrying out the planned strategy. The risk is that one of these key persons leaves the project.

Mitigation methods

Skysun was founded in 2017 and has commissioned more than 15 MWp of solar projects. The company has been expanding into battery energy storage systems (BESS) since 2025 to diversify its revenue streams.
